Not booting Mint on Asus UX32V due to nvidia GT 620M GPU

Postby Pipeh on Wed Apr 24, 2013 8:55 am

Hello,

For two days now I've been struggleling with installing Mint 14 cinnamon on my Assus Notebook UX32V. Hope you can help me :D .

By now I figured out that Mint didn't boot, but the screen went black due to a lack of an appropriate 3D graphic card driver from the default installation of Mint 14.

My graphic card is Nvidia Geforce GT 620M

So I found this post: http://askubuntu.com/questions/38780/how-to-set-nomodeset-for-installation.

I followed the post exactly and rebooted, then Mint booted and showed the "Linux Mint 14 from freedom came elegance" "with loading dots" screen. But afterwards the screen went black with a tiny white "_" in the upper corner. I can't figure out what to do now, any help is much appriciated :D ?

If you set this in Grub, it's only done once. After you reboot your computer, it has forgotten this setting. After adding nomodeset, did you press Ctrl-X to boot as instructed?

You have already installed Mint successfully? The Live DVD does not have Grub, but a different bootloader, that's why I am asking this.

Any options set in Grub, are used for only one boot. If you have managed to boot your system with some option, then that option can be saved in the /etc/default/grub file (you need to run sudo update-grub in terminal after editing /etc/default/grub).

If nomodeset does not fix your problems, I think it's not related to the NVIDIA GPU. In todays laptops with NVIDIA Optimus, Intel HD Graphics is used by default and the NVIDIA GPU is only used for accelerating programs that don't run well enough on Intel. So this should not cause much problems when booting.

Have you already tried launching Recovery Mode, and then choosing to continue normal boot on the recovery menu? That way, errors which occur during boot are actually shown.

I have already windows 7 installed. So now I want to install mint 14.

Im not sure whether mint's booted or not. Linux mint "from freedom came elegance ...." screen appears after the nomodeset boot, but then the screen goes black, with a small "_" in the upper left corner.

So I can't make any updates nor recovery mode.

hope this answers your questions. If not I don't know if what going wrong.

Greetings : O )

Are you now booting Mint from the DVD or did you install it already from Windows 7 through Mint4Win?

OK. That clears things up. Have you already tried selecting "Compatibility Mode" from the boot menu of the USB?
