I just installed Linux Mint on my laptop and I must say I'm VERY impressed. I have a friend that's not in the local area wanting to install Linux on his computer. We tried Debian since I had experience with that and I was using that on my Desktop. That worked ok, but it was hard to help him get things running smooth from over the phone. I had been using it so long that it seems easy to me to do things but giving help over the phone is a little tough with a lot of CLI-required info. About a week after that, I got my laptop in the mail and installed Mandriva on it. That ran nice on my laptop, but the Live CD won't boot on his computer (X is all screwed up and freezes after the computer freezes after running xfdrake from the CLI, so he never gets the LiveCD desktop).

Well, I had heard of Mint a while back and one of the things I did with my laptop was partiton it to hold about 5 or 6 distros to try different ones out. I figured laptops served this purpose much easier since I rarely like to reboot my desktop but my laptop is routinely shutdown. Anyway, I had alreay downloaded and was about to install Mint on my laptop when the Mandriva incident went down.

I'd like to have him try Mint but I was curious about how an ATI HD 3870 card would work. He has dual HD 3870 512MB cards in his system. The last thing I saw on this forum was from March but since then, I noticed that AMD had come out with drivers for the HD 3xxx series. Can anyone tell me how well the LiveCD will work and also how well Mint will work post-install? Thank you.

I don't know, but I think it'll work as both X and Envy works better and better
