Silent Boot solved

Postby H5N1 on Mon Jul 14, 2008 2:36 am

In menu.lst I have "ro quiet splash" kernel options but no silent boot is performing by the sys.
Instead of silent boot after splash screen I can see the output of the boot "Reading files needed to boot..." etc.

So it begins as a silent boot and then just changes to a verbose boot?
That's odd
Could be that the graphics card cant show the splash

I have an Acer Extensa 5220 (I'm not to blame, it's my company service laptop)
For your information I'm using the "Intel" driver in the xorg.conf

It seems that the boot is silent but the loading screen with the loading bar are missing.
That's why I initially did not put this thread in Grub section: I don't think it's a grub issue but something missing in the graphical silent boot...

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

This is a fairly new version. There is only one later (I believe) in the laptop segment - but a bunch in the desktop segment
Could be that something can't cope alright
If it works OK for the rest I suggest you live with it - it's simply not worth the work you probably have to do to fix it
That said I'll ask the team if they have an idea - we have had problems with the usplash

I can confirm this on my PC, but I'm using apt to update...

Ok, I can live with such a strange behaviour :)
But the problem described at viewtopic.php?t=14471 still persist! :)

This is from the Ubuntu forums

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... ash&page=2

1. Make sure you have the initramfs-tools update

2. sudo blkid

3. Check that swap line UUID from /etc/fstab matches swap UUID from step 2, if not change fstab.

4. Check that the UUID in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume matches the swap UUID from step 2, if not change resume file.

5. sudo initramfs-tools update

6. Restart

That fix worked on my machine, but I added the -u argument to update-initramfs so it would update the existing one instead of generating a new one.
