[SOLVED???] Cannot get past BusyBox Error

Postby sutukh19 on Tue Jul 15, 2008 12:31 pm

I successfully installed Mint 5 in a Dual boot configuration with XP but however when I reboot, the computer goes straight into Windows XP. I have a single 320G hdd spilt as follows into seperate primary partitions:

/dev/hda1 (ntfs) 48GB Windows XP
/dev/hda2 (ntfs) 218GB Stuff
/dev/hda3 (extended) Used for Mint 5
_____/dev/hda7 (ext3) 10GB /Root
_____/dev/hda5 (ext3) 20GB /home
_____/dev/hda6 (swap) 1GB
While running the command "find /boot/grub/stage1" I get the results:
(hd0,6)

What does this mean?
How Can I get my Grub to load at boot to select which operating system to load?

On a previous system I have successfully dual booted Ubuntu and XP and It worked like a charm with a similar setup with a 120GB hdd split into WInXP/Stuff/Extended Partition with Ubuntu. On a Dell XPS m1330.

Any help in the matter will be greatly appreciated.

My guess is that you installed XP second and it overwrote grub with it's own mbr

To restore grub

1. Pop in the Mint Live CD, boot from it until you reach the desktop.
2. Open a terminal window.
3. In the terminal type
Code: Select all
grub

4. Then
Code: Select all
root (hd0,6)

5. Type
Code: Select all
setup (hd0)

6. Quit grub by typing
Code: Select all
quit

7. Reboot.

Actually I installed MInt second...but however, your suggestion worked, but now I am getting a
"BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubunt12) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)" screen every time it boots into linux mint. :(

I have followed the instructions on the link and I am still getting the busy box error.
I was reading that Elyssa does not like a SATA and IDE MIX, I have a SATA DVD/RW and an IDE HDD could that possibly be the problem?

I have a mix of one SATA hard drive and one PATA DVD-RW. I know Mint 5 as the primary OS install works fine with my combination. I just wanted to share that combo info with you for future reference. Good luck.

I believe I have solved my problems, I read a thread earlier that Mint reads all drives as "/dev/sd*" even if they are "/dev/hd*"

So I edited my FSTAB and GRUB menu.lst as follows:

FSTAB:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/hda7
#UUID=8af4c4f4-d74e-4294-b6a7-80f46f3cc3da
/dev/sda7 / ext3 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/hda5
#UUID=6760b0e7-fffd-4897-9f04-c914684784ed
/dev/sda5 /home ext3 relatime 0 2
# /dev/hda6
#UUID=77544e35-8c5b-4fba-8c43-978e6074600f
/dev/sda6 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/hdb /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
#/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

GRUB:
title Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root=/dev/sda7 ro splash all_generic_ide floppy=off irqpoll
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic

title Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic (recovery mode)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root=/dev/sda7 ro single
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic

title Linux Mint, kernel memtest86+
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/memtest86+.bin

Also in FSTAB I have commented out the floppy disk drive!
I hope this helps someone else this has been irking me for the past few days, but at least I learned something in the process.
