<Solved>Mint 16 64bit Cinnamon Installer Crash

Post by robsbots »

Hi all

I am having a little trouble installing Mint 16 64bit Cinnamon.
The system is a Gigabyte H87M-HD3 board with an i5 4570 processor and 8Gb ram. I have a Western Digital 500Gb drive with a 250Gb partition with Vista Ultimate 64bit installed and 250Gb left unpartitioned.

When I get to the third screen, "Installation Type" I have no partitons showing. The drive is listed under "Device for bootloader Installation".
Gparted shows the Vista partition and free space, but not the installer. If I hit the +,- or change button the installer crashes with the screen linked below.

(Sorry. File to large to be embeded.)

Output from fdisk is as follows :-

Code: Select all

mint@mint ~ $ sudo fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x021a1fde

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda2   *        2048   488386559   244192256    7  HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
mint@mint ~ $
Any pointers as to where I am going wrong would be really helpful.

Thanks

Rob

First, use GParted to create the partitions you want in that unallocated space. Then run the installer, and choose Something Else. Then you will be able to choose the partition (or partitions) you want to install to.

Hi austin.texas

Thanks for the reply.
I have created two more partitions for a total of three as below
1 x ntfs, 1 x linux swap and 1 x ex3.

Code: Select all

mint@mint ~ $ sudo fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x021a1fde

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1       488386560   972578815   242096128   83  Linux
/dev/sda2   *        2048   488386559   244192256    7  HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda3       972578816   976773119     2097152   82  Linux swap / Solaris

Partition table entries are not in disk order
I still seem to have the same problem. Mint does not list any partitions.
I cannot see an option "Something else" anywhere.
All I can do is follow the install until I hit the partition screen and there I get stuck.
Where should I be looking to find "Something Else" ?

<edit>
I just noticed. On the bottom of the window are 7 indicators. I seem to jump from 2 lit idicators to 4.
1. lit indicator. Choose language page.
2. diskspace free and internet connected check page.
3. installation type page 1. (My setup skips this page)
4. Installation type page 2. Seems to allow you to mess with partitons if they are show.
If I hit "+","-" or "change" here the installer crashes.
I can't seem to get to 3 lit indicators. Not sure if this is a permmisions problem. In the UserGuide (For MATE) it shows the installer running as superuser in the window title but that does not seem to appear in Cinnamon.
I have even tried running "ubiquity gtk_ui" from the command line after a sudo su command so I think that should mean its run as root....
<end edit>

Thanks

This sounds like a bad installation disc.
Can you try burning another one?
First, check your iso file for the correct mdsum.

Hi austin.texas

The MD5 checked out on my downloaded ISO file.
I wrote the image with K3b. When you select an image to write, the software calculates the md5 hash and this was correct according to the Mint download page.
I then booted from the disc and selected "Check the integrity of the media" option from the boot menu.
After a while this left me at a press any key prompt.
"keys:Press any key to reboot your system"
It did not howerver proclaim the media to be good or bad. I assume it is good as no errors where reported but I think if this is the case there should be a message to confirm this.
So I assume my media is good. I'm currently copying files about to try and free up another hard drive to try an install with.
Other than that I really don't know what else to check.

Any more pointers would be gratefully recieved

Thanks for your help.

T don't understand why you would have trouble with it is the DVD you burned is good.
Since you have 8GB of ram, you might try loading the iso into ram instead of burning a DVD.
The instructions for that are here.

Have cleared a hard drive. Created a usb boot stick and installed for try.
Must have been the hard drive or the media.

Thanks for all your help.
