Trying to reset password but missing GRUB

Postby katrina on Fri Jan 03, 2014 6:07 am

Hi, folks.

I revived an old netbook with Linux Mint 15 last year but haven't actually used the netbook in months. I've since forgotten the password and have been trying to get back in with these guides:

one - http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/339
two - http://www.mikaellinusson.com/tech/2012/11/16/linux-mint-reset-or-change-root-password/
three - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/reset-your-forgotten-ubuntu-password-in-2-minutes-or-less/

Unfortunately, I can't get past "Hold Shift on boot", as GRUB never appears; the netbook just goes straight to the login screen. I also tried pressing M for manual recovery, but it then asks for a root maintenance password, which just brings me back to my first problem. Any ideas?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Boot using live-DVD/USB and chroot into the installed system and reset password
Code: Select all
sudo blkid  # tells partitions
sudo mount /dev/sdxy /mnt    ## where x=disk and y=partition
sudo chroot /mnt
ls
cd home
ls
passwd your_username_here
cd ..
exit
sudo umount /mnt

Wasn't able to give this a try until last night. When I get to

Code: Select all
sudo chroot /mnt

it says, "/bin/bash no such file or directory".

I should mention that the hard drive is encrypted. I remember the passphrase, just not my user password.
