BusyBox (initramfs) fail installing 16 on box with two hd's

Postby 12 Monkeys on Fri Jan 03, 2014 7:22 pm

Hi guys!

First of all: I love Mint. It has been my stable and lovely system for a while now. Xfce is my thing
and I have been running Maya since day one. This is on my main machine where I want stuff "just working" :)
Kudos to all you guys in the forums ( I have been lurking longtime ) for all the awesome input and the very
nice way you greet and help us newbies. You have helped me out much more than you know.. hehe.
And of course to the Clem and all the devs for forking Ubuntu!!

So... My problem is as follows. I was thinking of doing a clean install of 16 Xfce. Setup is a fairly new laptop.
120 GB SSD and a 500 GB HD.
While trying to install I get dropped to BusyBox and initramfs. As have a lot of others I gather...
It seems this a quite common problems for boxes with more than one disk.

FYI -- Yes! I have done the sums. Yes! I have googled. Yes! I have tried to look in the jungle of the Ubuntu forums (and here)
Yes! I don't want to take my laptop apart and physically disconnect anything and I don't want to dd my ssd either...

You lovely people have any suggestions?

Regards
Mikael

I'd want to make sure there are no bad sectors on either drive and that memtest runs 100%

Thank you for a quick answer! I have done all that. I have actually re-installed Maya Xfce after
trying to install 16, without any problems. I have also started up install cd's of CentOs, Archbang, Debian and a couple of others...
No problemos to reach the install interfaces!

Ubuntu 13.10 (and Xubuntu) also drops me to the same screen of BusyBox and initramfs.
My amateur guess is there is something wrong with the script on the the ISO

bump

My apologies! I am stumped here. Been all around the web and the only solutions seems to be
to actually physically to remove sdb. I tried using gparted and renaming my SSD from sda1 to just sda,
didn't work :( Any input would be very much appreciated!

My dear fellow Mint lovers. Today I downloaded mint 16 again. I've run the sums etc...
I am running Maya on a SSD and a 500 GB HDD on the side.
I know my laptop is ok. I am able to install a load of other operative systems (see the above) I have run every test I know of :)

When I try to install I get dropped to the same place...Busybox and initramfs,,,
I have tried searching for an answer on the web and google and, and ...
The only solutions I seem to find all say I have to physically remove the HDD.
To do that I really have to take my laptop apart. The HDD is not easily reached. The SSD and the RAM no problem.
But the HDD seems to be buried deep within my box

I have found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1241589
Is there any one of you fine gentleman or gentlewomen that has any knowledge if
this is a bug that will be fixed anytime soon?

Unfortunately I don't know and don't have any first-hand knowledge to solve the problem for you. (Didn't even know about it until your post, then confirmed with google search that others have run into it.)

Read through the bug report you posted. Like you said, most people resolved problem by disconnecting drives. However, post #44 reported making some changes to the live USB produced by UNetbootin and having that work. Someone else a few posts down seemed to confirm that doing that also worked for them. Did you see that and did you try what they did?

Here's the post and the relevant link that person used for changing UNetbootin USB:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/1241589/comments/44
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/USB%20Installation%20Media

From second link, it appears person did the following:
UNetbootin (Windows or Linux)

UNetbootin automates this task by providing a GUI to create a bootable Ubuntu Live USB drive from an ISO file, and can be run from both an installed Windows or Linux system, or from a liveCD.

Optional: If you need to activate the original Ubuntu livecd boot menu, for example if you want to disable the framebuffer or read the Ubuntu livecd HELP screens and cheatcodes, please make these changes to your USB drive after your UNetbootin installation is completed:

1) Delete the SYSLINUX.CFG file or rename it to be SYSLINUX.OLD

2) Enter the ISOLINUX folder and rename the ISOLINUX.CFG file to be SYSLINUX.CFG. You may or may not need to rename ISOLINUX.BIN to SYSLINUX.BIN, but it won't hurt.

3) Move up to the top level and rename the ISOLINUX folder to be SYSLINUX

Might as well give that a shot and see if it helps you.
Add "Solved" to title of thread if solution is found. (Go to your first post and hit "Edit" button.) This helps make it easier for others to find solutions that work.

Unfortunately, as for antenac, this didn't work for me either.
I still get dropped to initramfs... :(

Any ideas? Anyone?

Do you have virtual box installed on your current linux system and, if so, does it boot there :?:

What I usually do is install in a vb then install all the additional packages I want then rsync it to a flash drive so I can then rsync the flash to partitions on other computers.

It's a little involved, but it works.

Thank you WharfRat! Yeah, I have 16 up an running on my vb no problem.
But being kind of a newbie rsync scares me a little :P

There has been some additions to this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1241589
Especially comment 55 looks promising: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... omments/55
I will try it out this weekend when I have a little more time.

If I don't get that to work I will use my trusty Maya until the next LTS :D

12 Monkeys,

Looks promising alright. I've looked through the initram's init script and was going to suggest trying root=UUID=xxxxxx with the UUID from blkid.

I didn't see any parameter evaluation for live_media, but I'm not looking at the install media's initram.

You know you're really fried when you fall into the ash shell hey :D

Good luck

So... I tried it out this solution over the weekend. I had problems
converting the Ubuntu entries to Mint... I did multiple runs and in the
end, not wanting to break my working installation and having to re install
I ended up aborting the effort .

Couldn't get it working. Being a newbie and all.
Maya is working flawlessly so why bother really.
The next LTS for the win :)
