live cd problems

Postby QuinnTE on Wed Aug 20, 2008 5:25 pm

every time i try to boot the live cd, it hits a wall. i tried using the post above to solve my issue, but removing "quiet splash --" and replacing it with different combination of noapic, nolapic, etc. only seems to change where it crashes.
i'm completely inexperienced with linux, and using a dell optiplex 320 (i read in some other forums that there have been issues with other optiplex models)

the strange thing is that i downloaded VirtualBox and the live cd seems to run fine in it, with the exception of one error message about "starting the GNOME Settings Daemon". :?
not sure what to do at this point. is there something in the bios i need to change?

You can run it in Virtualbox under Windows?
This indicates that there is a problem with your graphics card as Virtualbox uses a virtual card
Try compatibility mode - there's a good chance it works
Post back and tell us how you manage - if it still is a failure tell us about your hardware as detailed as you can
You see dell optiplex 320 does not say much - can be different hardware in the same model, but I know old optiplex can have problems

I recently installed Mint 5 GNOME on an OptiPlex GX150 (P3-1.3GHz with 512MB RAM) and everything worked fine. You may wish to check the amount of RAM you have. Using the Live CD with 256 MB is syrup-slow, but once installed, has no problems. Some OptiPlexes might be troublesome, but the one I worked with was easy. I just wanted to share with you that it can be done. Good luck, and have fun.

compatibility mode has the same problems. it just crashes at a different point. also, i thought i should add that i tried installing it from V-box, but it just freezes... not sure that would have worked anyway.

here is my dxdiag info, i have another program that can pull detailed info off my system, so if something's missing here, let me know.
