how can i install linux mint 5 from hard disk?
The basic answer is you cannot - not if it is the same disk as you want to install to.
There is an old topic about this in the forum and with some tweaking that needs a considerable amount of Linux knowledge you might be able to do it.
But it's easy to install from a USB pendrive and I presume the same would apply if it was a USB hard disk
