How to UPGRADE from Mint KDE 4.0 to 5.0

Hello,

I have downloaded the latest Mint KDE - Elyssa and burned it to DVD. Now when I boot to the disc, I start the installation routine, but I do not see any option to upgrade my existing Mint installation. I would like to keep my existing settings, customizations, Home directory files, etc. Instead, the installer seems to want to format my Linux partition (even though it's already Ext3), so then I would have to start over from scratch.

Could someone please tell me how I can upgrade (and not overwrite) my existing Mint installation? Thanks very much.

If you look on http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_elyssa.php , you will see some general suggestions for upgrading the main version down near the bottom of the page.

The KDE info is on http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_elyssa_kde.php .

That should give you some things to research and consider. Good luck.

I didn't see anything relevant on the KDE page (I do not have a /home partition), but on the other one I saw that you could perform a sort of "dynamic" upgrade using these commands:
  • apt update
  • apt upgrade
  • apt dist-upgrade
I think these steps might only be applicable to the default Gnome edition of Mint; does anyone know if they will upgrade Mint KDE from 4.0 to 5.0?
