Mint 17 suddenly stopped booting

Post by archmute »

Hello all,

My laptop suddenly stopped booting. And instead of normal boot process, shortly after the startup shows "Boot menu", with HDD option, after choosing this option, it shows it again.

Short system description:
Laptop Lenova E330
OS: Linux Mint 17, single OS installed, no dual boot.
Single HDD, encrypted by luks. Thus 2 partitions: /dev/sda2 (normal partition, I'm not very confident but suspect that bootloader is located here), and /dev/sda3 (crypt-luks partition)

what I already did:

1. Memtest - passed.
2. Booted from usb, and performed fsck -c /dev/sda2 .It showed updating bad blocks.
3. fsck -c of the luks partition done via this solution http://serverfault.com/questions/375090 ... ypted-disk
I'm still not sure if I'm working correct with encrypted partition, my step-by-step:

sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda2 _dev_sda2
sudo vgchange -aly
sudo fsck -c /dev/mapper/mint--vg-root
After that I just rebooted PC (shall i encrypt luks partition back somehow?). And still having that issue.
Maybe smbody can advise other suggestions?

Get a HIREN bootcd and load the vendor harddisk tool from it to check the sanity of your hard drive.
It's of no use try to fix linux if your underlying hardware fails.
So first step is : Make sure hardware is ok.
Start with the Harddrive first , then do a memory check.
