Linux Mint 5 boot problem solved

Postby Originalas on Fri Oct 10, 2008 11:24 am

I've had Mint 4 Daryna on my second HDD, it worked fine
now i upgraded to Mint 5 Elysa and it doesn't boot, i goot OS choice meniu, the time runs out and i got this screen..

Image

Tried Super Grub, it starts other screen, but the ends like with ifrms> command promt or something..

So i just want to have Mint 5 on my old HDD. (Cuz i use two HDD, one with windows and old for linux, i use bootloader from sdb not from MBR, cuz then i need linux i just go to bios and change my HDD oder, but with Mint 5 it ends like in first photo) how to fix it?

I don't want to install any bootloaders to MBR or something, because i don't want to f* up my windows boot and have any OS choices meniu by default, cuz it slows down windows boot and i don't use linux frequently.

So how to make that loader work only from my old HDD?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I'm sorry but image #2 with Super Grub is of no help - I can't read whats behind the blue line - I can see it says Elyssa, but...
From the first image I conclude this is not really an error in Elyssa
This is error 17 explained
17 : Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.

I guess you have menu.lst pointing at the Windows partition
Do you only have Mint on the same disk as Windows? Just asking to be sure, you indicate that
Does Windows start as normal Windows? Just asking to be sure again, you indicate that
Now what's on sda? Is sda always connected?
Coming this far I realize that it may be the problem described and solved here

I've two hdds like this:
IDE with Linux partition and NTFS with no OS
SATA with a lot of partitions and Vista boatloader with XP and Vista..

Earlier i just changed bootdisk priority in BIOS, to boot IDE HDD fisrt for linux, and Sata first for normal Windows usage.. now windows works, Mint graphic grub works too, but after grub i get this error like unable to mount..

I think maybe i need to remove everything from my IDE HDD, coplete reformat it and install fresh Mint, but after complete formate, i can see many grubs and a lot of Linux selections anyway. :( Don't know how to remove all that boot stuff completely.. :/

Super Grub is good - I think you can use it to get it back to where it was before the problems
