Hello. I am new to dual booting and I want to boot Linux Mint 5. I have Windows XP Home installed on my hard drive right now with a 20GB primary partition that is free. When I put the live cd in, it will do the auto boot countdown thing, then it will go to a loading screen where the bar slides around for a bit. Then it goes to a screen kinda like a dos prompt where i have to input commands. I dont think it is supposed to be like that. Can someone tell me whats going on? Also, will I have to boot from the cd every time or is there a way I can install it on the 20GB hard drive I have to where it will dual boot. Thank you very much
What you discribe is most likely caused by your video card and the Live CD not being able to find the right driver for it. Though other things can cause that problem as well , there are many options you can try at the prompt. here is a web sight that may be of help in figuring out the one you need , but i suspect the acpi=no will do the trick for you. hope this helps. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions
Also if you install Mint the grub boot loader is very good at finding windows xp in a dual boot situation and when you reboot it will give you a choice of which O.S. you want to boot. (With that said it is always a good Idea to back up your XP System and critical files just in case you run into a problem.
