Questions about my intsallation

Hi,

I just tried to reinstall linux mint. I thought I used the partition that was setup for mint before, it was about 12 gigs big.

When my new installation finished there were new icons on my desktop that were not there before when I click them I can see some of my windows files.

When I go look at how big my hard drive is, it is bigger than before. Before I installed on a 12 gig partition so that's how bigg the OS thought my harddrive was. But now this size is my whole hardrive (about 54 gigs).

I'm not really sure what happened and why I can see some of my windows files from linux. Can some one explain what's going on?
