Ubiquity installer always crashes

Post by cmsdloma »

Hi all,

I successfully installed Linux Mint 17.1 64-bit MATE on multiple machines directly from the original Live CD without a problem. I also fully installed it onto a large USB-stick (a 256Gb USB3) and I can boot from it and use the OS perfectly. I installed Ubiquity on it from the package manager, with the idea of using the USB-stick to rapidly install onto more machines.

However, booting the USB stick version I made and running the Ubiquity installer on various machines, Ubiquity always crashes at the same point :-( It crashes after choosing the locale. Here's the relevalt portion from the syslog:

I tried different USB sticks, and different target machines, same results.

I also tried both unmounting and not unmounting when prompted. The target disk's partitions were not mounted, but it always prompts to unmount the source (USB-stick) volumes, so I usually decline.

I always manually partition the target, and choose the target device for GRUB carefully. I always get past the manual partitioning stage, and it always crashes after choosing geographical location. (I choose London).

I've not done anything special or unusual with the install on the USB-stick itself, and I've not fiddled with Ubiquity - it's all 'out of the box'. BTW, it did the exact same thing with Linux Mint 17.0. I thought I'd wait to try a fresh installation with 17.1 before posting; but the results are identical.

APT and Synaptic work fine in the USB-stick installation. It's not a 'Live-CD', but a full RW installation which otherwise is working fine.

If anyone could help fix my Ubiquity, I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks,
Dave

Try this, I just fix a poblem with ubi-partsomething:

1 boot on live USB or CD (you'll need a software that is not in linux whe instlled on a HD)
2 Open main menu and type (or look for) Gparted
3 launch this software
4 click the 'device' menu
5 click 'set a partition table' (or translate from french 'créer une table de partition', yes I'm french)
6 check if your HD is set as MSDOS (you'll find this info on the left border of the software window, 1st line
sorry I can't access this screen: I'm using the partitions)
7 if yes change it to 'dev' and don(t forget to apply
8 try to install as usually with the live USB/CD
9 if it works then you're welcome ^^

Hi,

I think you're saying it has to be a classical MBR, not a GPT. The disks are already MBRs. Thanks anyway.

Anyone know how I get the Mint team's attention to fix Ubiquity? :D

Thanks,
Dave
