Installing Linux Mint 17 Black Screen

Post by bemery94 »

When I try to run linux mint 17 on liveusb in EUFI mode (to install it), the screen turns to black after selecting "try linux mint" both in the normal mode and also compatibility mode. I've tried everything I've been able to find on forums but still haven't had any luck. I also managed to install it in legacy mode but I'm dual booting with WIndows 8 so I need to install it in UEFI. My computer is a Dell XPS 15 with 3200 x 1800 resolution and an Nvidia GeForce GT 750M. Any ideas? If you need any additional info just let me know and I'll be happy to post it. Thanks!

Hello bemery94 and welcome to Mint,

The problem with the black screen is most likely due to your Nvidia gpu. You will need to boot with nomodeset parameter. See this note from the release notes:
Solving freezes with some NVIDIA GeForce GPUs
If you are unable to boot Linux Mint with an NVIDIA card, or if you are experiencing constant freezes and system lock ups, please append "nomodeset" to your boot arguments. At the boot menu of the live DVD/USB, press Tab to edit the boot arguments and add "nomodeset" at the end of the line.

If you're still having issues, you can also remove "quiet splash --" from that same line.

Alternatively you can use the "nouveau.noaccel=1" boot argument.

Once the system is installed, use the Driver Manager to install the nvidia-304 driver.
replace 304 driver with nvidia-current.

Also for secureboot /uefi you may want to give boot-repair a try following it's instructions for enabling uefi worked for me.
you can get it here:

good luck.
