Problems with macbook booting

Post by the_hound »

OK
i have a macbook running snow leopard and am trying to set up linux on it to get a little more out of this machine.
I got the distro from linux website.
the exact version i got is
Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca Xfce edition 32-bit

You can see it on their home page as well as a couple others.
This is my first time doing this so bear with me.
This is what I've done so far,
1. Downloaded and installed rEFit. It DOES work correctly on power up.
2. Created a partition using Boot Camp Assistant.
3. Downloaded the Linux iso from their website then transferred to a brand new flash drive.

Now, when i rebooted to test this out, i had the normal options of rEFit (boot mac osx OR boot Legacy from.. (I think thats the correct way its labeled) shut down/restart)
I tried to boot Legacy from.. as its my only other option and get stuck with a page of errors and at the bottom it says Apple has problems booting from external HDs blah blah.

Is there something im missing here?
Did i get the wrong edition for my macbook? What should i do to get this to boot ?

Sorry for the LONG story but any help is definitely appreciated. Thanks!

Additional specs in case :
Mid 2007 macbook
snow leopard 10.6.3
(cant update any higher hence this linux mission)
8 GB flash drive

While you have posted quite a bit of information here, some crucial details are missing that likely prevent others from trying to help.

Have you tried burning Linux to a cd, and booting/installing from that?

In any event, it might also be useful for you to share the exact page of errors that you recieved, rather than "blah blah". No disrespect intended here. I truly couldn't think of anything else for you based on what you've shared so far.
