A couple of days ago I installed Mint 17.1 64-bit on to one of the systems. Previous versions of Mint have always had a 'System Information' package available that allows you to check the OS, hardware, etc. set-up. However I can not find it on Mint 17.1. Has it been removed or have I an issue/problem?

Take one of them.
Additional in the terminal:
inxi -Fx; in case of posting the info anywhere: inxi -Fxz

Thank you for the information. However whilst this works the GUI would be useful for my non-techie people particularly if they are on the end of a phone...

In the linked thread are 2 GUI solutions. And as long as the welcome screen does not get deactivated for automatic appearance it will get shown after each logging in.

It's in the Menu and called "System Profiler and Benchmark", if not, just install hardinfo via Synaptic Package Manager.
