Mint 17 won't allow me log in

Post by Frank Dillon »

I was messing with /var trying to get Apache permissions right and must have done something stupid.
When I try to log in now, I get the "Server Authentication ……/var/lib/mdm …"screen.
So I do Ctl+Alt+F2 and try to log in to safe mode that way.
I put in my username and password and there is a flash of "last login etc. " on the screen but it instantly returns to the login dialog again.
Is there any way I can log in as root directly?
Or is there another way to solve this issue?
Thank you for any help you might be able to give.

Try this or boot Mint in recovery mode (second option on GRUB menu) and then choose that option (root) from recovery menu. When in shell type "password" to create a new one. Maybe you will need to change your user account password with passwd name (replace "name" with your user name) or something else. Look here.
