I understand that but I read in some tutorials that I would need to change settings in UEFI whereas it seems in 17.2 all I need to do is disable Secure Boot? Which one is right?

Can anyone confirm this? It's possible to only disable secure boot and leave UEFI/fast boot settings/etc. as it is?

you should be able to disable secure-boot as that is only for win-8x

but you would still need the UEFI bit to boot your PC.
- win-8x may fail to boot if the secure-boot is left off.
generally, if you install Mint & then turn secure-boot back on, then you can boot both.

but2- it does seem to vary from PC to PC as the manufacturers vary how they implement this standard.

I have a very limited experience with Acer Nitro win 8.1 installed : only secureboot disabled
I can boot live linuxmint-17.2 mate/cinnamon do compilation of grub2.02-beta...for efi_platform......,even develop emulation android for fun....
the whole stuff is just on a usb stick 8GB (not even usb drive !) ; nothing installed to the beast

if curious :
have a look at https://sites.google.com/site/grubefiki ... -multiboot
