Screen fades then hangs - help!

I loaded Linux Mint a few days ago and everything seems to be ok except sometimes the screen fades to half grey then I have to force quit that application. Sometimes it appears back and I can continue on but mostly I force quit. What is this? I have never seen this, can someone tell me how to fix or at least where to look . . .

This happens when an application is getting locked. I only see it with Firefox when internet goes down and it is only the application that has problem that's greyed out
Which application gives you problems?

Husse - I purchased and loaded CrossOver and installed MS Office XP. Nothing in Office XP will run without locking but CrossOver runs fine. I contacted CrossOver tech help and they said Office XP should run fine. In the last few days I looked at Openoffice 3.0 and it meets my needs so I unloaded Office XP and everything is fine. Thanks for your help . . .
