Removing the 'install' icon from a persistant USB

Postby hwc.terror on Tue Dec 30, 2008 12:59 pm

Hi all

I'm quite new to Linux, having tried Ubuntu in the past, I prefer Linux Mint because it is more user friendly.

I have successfully installed a persistent installation of Linux Mint on my 4GB USB drive.

So far everything seems al right, except for one thing. An 'install' icon appears every time I boot up the OS, even after shift+deleting, it still re-appears after a reboot. Could this be deleted permanently somehow? Or alternatively, is there some start-up script that does this automatically?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I don't want to go deep into this but I think this may be the result of the somewhat "unorthodox" install you have to make to get a persistant install on a USB stick. It's probably something in /etc/init.d that makes it come back
I can't test as I don't have a USB stick big enough (not to talk of no time for it :))

Thanks for your help, but there was nothing in /etc/init.d that was linked to the desktop install icon.

But I did however manage to remove the install icon permanently by doing the following:

Code: Select all
sudo su
cd /usr/share/applications
rm ubiquity-gtkui.desktop

Thanks for your help anyway.

Ok - you've got rid of the icon, but not of the action that put it there (I think)
And of course it was my mistake not to ask you to search for ubiquity (I prefer locate -i for that)
