My linux mint 17 dvd arrived today. When i insert the dvd, all i get is a list of files
.disk
boot
casper
dists
EFI
pool
preseed
MD5SUMS
README
I've tried to open the README with windows 10, but word or wordpad won't open them.
Any clues?
Thanks so much.

Re: Install/bootdisc
leave the disk in the drive, and reboot the PC.
if all is ok, it will now run the live_disk rather than the HDD.
if it still boots the HDD, check the boot order in the BIOS.
once you can get into the live environment, then check that all of the hardware is working.
after you have finished playing with the new environment,
post back here, for instructions on how to Install the new Operating System.

Re: Install/bootdisc
Thanks for your help,Pierre.
Have restarted several times and it always boots to windows 10. Have changed the bios to boot from the dvd, but it still goes straight to windows.
I think either they sent me a dud disk or my dvd drive is playing up. The dvd drive does, however, work fine with other dvds.

Re: Install/bootdisc
More than unlikely.
What is this computer: brand and type?
Try to write the ISO image to an USB stick and try to boot that. I had a similar case in the past, where the dvd was perfectly Ok, but has been ignored by one computer. A newer version of this computer did not have the problem, so it was clearly a hardware issue. But on this problematic computer booting with the stick worked.
P.S. I just reread, that you did not download the ISO image for Mint, but you got a physical DVD. So you must at first download the ISO file.

Re: Install/bootdisc
I have tried to put the files on to usb, but it says it cant read the files.
System is 5yo, but still going well. Toshiba Satalite, i7, 8gig ram, 500gig hd.
I got the mint disc from osdisk.com, as I thought a few $ was worth not having to muck around with downloading......looks like i was wrong.
I'll google how to download mint and give that a try.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Install/bootdisc
Not "files", but only one ISO file. And don't copy it to the stick, as it would be a data stick, you must create a bootable stick, which than behaves as a bootable optical disk.dblenny wrote:I have tried to put the files on to usb, but it says it cant read the files.
I don't now which edition or version of Mint you chose. Pick it here.
Re: Install/bootdisc
32 or 64 bit? In any case this is one of the 2 topmost editions.
