trouble installing linux mint on my dell system

Postby ultolinuxnewb on Sun Jan 04, 2009 12:28 am

stats:
Dell Dimenision 4550
2.66 533 front side bus
Single stick 1 gig ram
Bios A08
Nvida 6200

Symptoms: during install system freezes. Happens before I reach the livecd desktop.

Hey guys I am hoping someone can help me out on this. I have reviewed many a fora now and I am no closer.
I have also tried to install with the mint4win.exe file. This installed fine. However it will also freeze before I reach the login leaving an X in the middle of my screen.

I have reviewed the guide provided on the newb forum. viewtopic.php?f=90&t=13252
and followed the directions. I also visted various troubleshootng guides to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions. I can be more specific just let me know.

for the record I couldn't install ubunto 8.10 on this machine either but I could on an older emachine

Seems you've done a bit, but have you checked the md5sum of the ISO and burned as slow as possible?
Have you tried compatibility mode? (Press any key while the live CD counts down)

Husse,

Yes I performed the md5sum and it matched. I also tried running in compatibilty mode and adding extra paramters including monitor settings. And yes later I burned another disk as slow as possible with the same result.

When I don't run in compatibilty mode it freezes when it tries to initiallize the gnome desktop. when i run in compatibilty mode is freezes the line after that, which i think describes some kind of tools.

This morning downloaded and installed linux mint version 5. So far it works. Now i get to install DB2 express-c, Websphere App Server Community Edition, and eclipse. Fun fun.

I would be more than happy to implement any suggestions that anyone would want me to implement if you would like to test. I am not a linux pro but i am very comfortable on command lines. I use it exlusively on other os's.

Thanks for the timely response!

Well - stick with Elyssa - it is a LTS after all
I see some reports of failed install with Felicia but success with Elyssa. I must conclude that some change in the kernel is no good for some hardware
This is to my mind the (only?) really bad thing about Linux - a new kernel that supports new hardware should not mean lost support for other hardware
Run lspci and post, I might get some idea from it....

You run lshw - a bit too much info lspci would have been enough
I just found more problems with this chipset
I have to find that topic and come back to you, right now it's time for the kitchen and cooking today's dinner :)

I have not found a solution, and it seems like newer kernels don't like the Brookdale chipset. I think that's your problem
