The simplest thing to do would be to install startupmanager using Package Manager or from terminal run:
You'll then find it in the Control Center menu under System. (You'll also find it under Administration, but that "launcher" commonly does NOT work). Or you can open it from Terminal by running:
Then under the "Advanced" tab you can tick on "Limit the number of kernels" in the boot menu. I always choose "2" just in case a new kernel update refuses to work properly so I can go back to "Boot Option" tab and choose to boot the previous kernel until I get everything straightened out on the new kernel.
Also under the "Advanced" tab you can un-tick the "Create boot option for memetest". How often do you use that?
Finally, given the amount of problems you've encountered, I'd check the options in Update Manager and make sure you're not getting Level 4 & 5 updates!
