GRUB installation problem?

Post by NiksaVel »

Hey all,

I've made a fresh install of kubuntu 8.10 to play around in KDE4 goodness, but I have a problem with GRUB not showing up after installation - just the missing operating system message... no GRUB at all. The installation went fine, the live cd checks out as well as md5.

I've later installed openSUSE on another partition... tried reinstalling the kubuntu and after reboot I was greeted by the opensuse grub - nothing changed?!?!?!! Tried updating grub conf in opensuse via yast, it found the kubuntu installation added it, however after trying to select it from grub during boot I get to the kubuntu grub and than I get missing file... something is deffinitelly wrong.

I've noticed that my OS hdd is recognized everywhere as sda and kubuntu registers it as sdc... important?

here is the menu.lst from the kubuntu:

Hi NiksaVel
Long time no see :)
This seems like a problem with UUID
I think the UUID has changed and so you get the file/disk not found message
http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php ... _a_problem
http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php ... annot_boot
and/or (or not :)) grub
http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php ... _your_grub
I see that openSUSE uses the serial number of the hard disk - ingenious I think....

Hey Husse,

long time no c indeed... but that doesn't mean I don't drop down to the good old minty forums now and than :) just not enough time to hang around as much now that I've got a full time radiology residency...

anyways... I've figured it out on my own if any1 is interested... the first line needed to be changed in the ubuntu grub... so now I've set the openSUSE grub which is at the hdd mbr to point to the partition sda4 (where the ubuntu grub is installed for some reason...).. and manually edited the menu.lst from kubuntu...

from:
title Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
uuid e348df62-bcae-4bcc-971f-759375e475ff
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=UUID=e348df62-bcae-4bcc-971f-759375e475ff ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic
quiet

to:
title Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
# uuid e348df62-bcae-4bcc-971f-759375e475ff
root (hd0,3)

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=UUID=e348df62-bcae-4bcc-971f-759375e475ff ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic
quiet

there... for some reason the latest ubuntu 8.10 and grub have completely differet hdd enumerations... :/ go figure

especially nice feature for n00bs I think

so the UUID is different for GRUB and for the rest of the OS... really weird

Looks the same for me, but it is hard to read such strings
Do you have a separate boot partition?

no... simple as it gets except for the separate /home

not sure if it makes a difference, but the hdd that the OS is installed on is IDE, while the rest are SATA... I just think that the latest kernel used by intrepid has different "prioritizing" and makes it sdc instead of sda. Does this make any sense? :P

This can be important - that's what this wiki is about
http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php ... annot_boot
Linked to it above
If you have a removable disk (USB) or if you have different kernels this can be changed and especially with a mix of IDE and SATA - can get really complicated
