initramfs errors stopping me from booting

Postby 0dbm on Tue Jan 20, 2009 2:14 pm

Hello there, I've been struggling with MINT for a week or so now so here's how we stand:

I donwloaded the main version of MINT from the homepage, checked the MD5 hash and burned at the slowest speed possible.
Booted the Live CD and installed on a 30GB free space at the end of my primary drive (which currently boots windows XP)
It installed without any errors, grub boots up and regardless of whether I choose generic kernal or recovery I get the same error:

Code: Select all
/dev/sda5 doesnt exist drop to shell
missing modules /cat/proc/ (modules: ls /dev)

it then goes on to say:

Code: Select all
(initramfs) End_Request: I/O error, Dev Sr0 Logical block 170103
Buffer_I/O error, Dev Sr0 Logical Block 170103

and it keeps saying that again and again filling the screen
(*Note: because the screen gets filled quickly I had to scribble down what it said, the above is pharaphrased and may not be Exact but its close])

I did some searched and played with the settings on my SATA controller from IDE to RAID to AHCI... right now its on IDE mode, if I change it I cant boot anything (grub doesnt come up)

I am running a Shuttle SP35P2V2 with a q6600 proc, 4gb RAM, a 640GB SATA HD and a 250GB SATA HD and a 7950 EvGa video card

any ideas?

/dev/sda5 doesnt exist drop to shell

This is it - for some reason you are trying to boot from a non existent partition
I hope the solution is in either or both of these two wikis
http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php ... annot_boot
http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php ... _a_problem
Perhaps as simple as to boot the live CD and use Gparted to inspect your partitions and correct menu.lst
Open as root the Mint partition and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst so the lines in grub point to the right partition
It looks something like this
title Linux Mint 6, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
root (hd0,8)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=/dev/sda9 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic

Note that grub starts counting from zero so (hd0,8) is the ninth partition of hard disk one
Have to leave for work now

alright here's what I did:

Booted to the live CD, opened up Gparted and looked at my linux partitions: ext4 which is at the address HD0/ SDA5

so I opened up terminal and typed:

Code: Select all
sudo nano

in nano I opened up menu.lst and found the part you described, under root I changed this from (HD0,4) to (HD0,5) (because my ext4 filesystem partition is sda5 right?) unfortunately its still not booting.

I am going to try the super grub disk

ok, I booted from the Live CD again and using gedit I changed menu.lst, adding several more entry's from (hd0,1) all the way up to (hd0,7)

none of them booted, I get a "no such partition" or "unable to boot from partition" (I dont remember exactly what it said)

Im going to try reinstalling again...

in nano I opened up menu.lst

This is a bit tricky (but just a bit) if you are on the live CD - you have to make sure it is the file on the hard drive you are editing, not the RAM disk file the live CD uses
So I'd suggest that you go to Places in the menu and open "Computer"
"Filesystem" on the live CD is the live CD :) so open the other disks (You may have to authenticate - no (blank) password used on the live CD) until you find the Mint partition. Sadly you don't see which "/dev" they are...
Then edit that menu.lst - I'm pretty sure you edited the live cd one
Remember you have to change twice
I have
title Linux Mint 6, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
root (hd0,8)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=/dev/sda9 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic

You havee to edit both
When things work OK you can use startupmanager (or is it called botupmanager) to do this

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

I'm pretty sure I edited the right one, I know I didnt say it in my post but I mounted the ext3 volume and edited the menu.lst in there. also I can see my edits on the grub loader (I added several entry's which show up)

I did not see that 2nd place to change so that may very well be my error... I will report back

you want (hd0,4) not (hd0,5) for sda5

Grub starts counting from 0 so sda1 would be (hd0,0) sda2 (hd0,1) etc etc.
