I understand your panic...
Let's work on the xp part first...
Here is a site I found which offers some some ways to recover the xp boot.ini and/or repair.

Pay attention to the Warnings especially about backing up your data. (You did mention a usb mint, you could always run that and burn cd's with your data for safekeeping! AND as long as you have this, you can always reach your data, anyway...)
