Dbus error message and kernel panic?

Hi all and thank you for this great place to use and discuss LinuxMint. I just tried LM for the first time and all I can say is WOW?

When I boot my computer I get a Kernel Panic notification. So I can boot by hitting Esc at boot up and selecting "Safe Mode". At the text login I can type "startx" and the system will boot into X and run.

After the window manager starts I get the error message "Dbus not started, start Dbus at /etc/init.d/dbus. When I go there I don't know what to do .

I tried to goto the administrator>system settings in KDE Control Center but that does not load either Can anyone assist

Try the command:

sudo /etc/init.d/dbus start

That will start the dbus daemon or at least try to (it could be what is causing the kernel panic).

or you could change the run level.

sudo init 3
sudo init 5

I forget what run level save mode is but the normal run level is level 5.

WOW , that was fast. Thanks for the reply, BOO. I will give that a try and let you know how it goes

If it works, is there any way to make it permanent

I think you will still get the kernel panic.
that is the underlying problem.
once we can get rid of that problem the machine will just boot normally.

I'm just trying to find what causes the kernel panic problem first. most likely some kernel driver/module.

Hi Boo, that did the trick. Now I don't get the dbus error message. However, when I log out and back in again I have to open the console and re-type the dbus message again and it still defaults to the text login until I type "startx".

Well, Boo, this is strange. I logged out and restarted the computer. It rebooted normally without the kernel panic and for the first time I saw the login screen. After logging in all the settings I had made to the desktop including programs links on the desktop were gone. It was as if I was starting over again or had changed users.

But everything is working fine now. I don't know what happened but it works.

Ive seen similar things after install.
a few reboots later and and all is fine.
