A 32 bit system that doesn't have the PAE kernel patches enabled, which describes Mint and most other 32 bit distros, can address 4 Gig of memory. Of this 4 Gig, up to 1 Gig is reserved for hardware and other system uses. Most 32 bit systems can use from 3 to 3.5 Gig. of system memory. That is all the address space available to user space.
