HDD Install after Mint4win and compiz faulty

Postby ziemowitt on Mon Feb 09, 2009 5:45 pm

Hi,

My situation now is:
hda1 with Windows XP
hda2 with data and Mint 6 installed under Windows.

I smashed something in Compiz Options and don't know now how to redo it... :)
I cant login because can see only some strange colorfull shapes and computer is hanged...

If you decide to install Mint 6 on hda2 partition what will be with MBR and GRUB?
Will it be overwritten or what?

Please, help me.

Bless ya
;)

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

If you can get to a command line or switch consoles (ctrl+alt+F1), try running
Code: Select all
metacity --replace
, I think that should disable compiz, and allow you to use ccsm to go back to the defaults.

If not post back, maybe we can find where the defaults for compiz are stored and delete that file.

Reinstalation of Mint4win & instalation sequence of Mint/Win

Postby ziemowitt on Tue Feb 10, 2009 9:24 am

Thanx Proxima Centauri but I was so unpatient that I decided to remove Windows instalation before You were kind to post me back :)

and now I've noticed that after shut down computer didnt turned off...
... may it be fault of some reintallation bug or what?

After work I will see if it repeats because till now I didnt have time

Back to my question about MBR and GRUB, could you interpretate for me the task of sequence of instalation of Linux and Windows?
As I heard, you can install Linux when you've already got Windows but inversely - first Linux, than Windows - is not proper.

I'm not sure I understand your question completely, do you mean that when you try and shutdown the computer didn't fully shut off? Is this with the LiveCD, or running Linux Mint after installation?

Also,
When you install Linux Mint on a seperate partition, with Windows already installed, grub will write to your MBR and allow you to select Linux or Windows before booting.
If you have Linux Mint installed, and then install Windows to a seperate partition, Windows will automatically rewrite itself to the MBR, and now you can only boot Windows.
The way to fix this is to reinstall grub with the Linux Mint LiveCD.

Tutorial's can be found for reinstalling grub using google, search"reinstall grub ubuntu" or something.
I think there's a Mint wiki page on reinstalling grub as well.
