Gparted can't see my partitions! Shows just "Unallocated"!

Postby mig_akira on Mon Feb 09, 2009 8:52 pm

Hello everyone!

I was going to install Linux Mint 6 using the Live-CD. When I booted and clicked on INSTALL, everything went fine until the Gparted screen.

I have one 320gb hard disk, divided into 3 partitions (/, /home, Windows). The problem is, Gparted can't see anything! It just shows one empty bar, as if there was nothing in my hard disk, and the only option I have is to completely format the hard disk!

That aside, all the rest is working just fine. I cant boot into my windows, my Linux Mint 5, etc., and there is no problem at all.

Does anyone know what might be happening?

Thanks!

EDIT--

When I run Gparted from the terminal, it shows this message:
======================
libparted : 1.8.9
======================
Can't have overlapping partitions.

And when I run fdisk -l /dev/sda it shows:

Well I was able to fix the order, using fdisk /dev/sda, then "x", then "f".
But it didn't help with the gparted problem...=(

Download and burn the iso to a CD for GParted Live. After you have properly burned the CD, boot to it and take a look at what is actually going on in your harddrive.

I am not sure what the issue could be, but even I faced the same issues. This could be due to the fact that vista can have partitions that are not ending on boundaries. I was planning to run testdisk on my disk & correct it. Not sure if I corrected my disk with it, but the partition manager that comes with PCLOS installer could recognize my partitions & I could create a new partition.
Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it -Husse

Thanks everyone, for your answers!

Well, I was able to fix the problem now!

I was downloading Gparted LiveCD when I read about Vista partitions not ending on boundaries, and entered Vista to check. It's Disk Manager showed all my partitions, but there was one less partition than Gparted was showing. SDA1 and SDA3 were, I think, the same partition, strange as it may sound...

Since I own a Dell Notebook, I have to use a Dell Disc before installing any OS, in order to create a "restore" partition and a "diagnosis" partition, or something. They don't show up in Windows, and I never bothered with them in linux. But they must have caused a problem, because that partition was the one being shown as if it was two!

I just deleted that partition and now Gparted is working just fine!

Again, thank you all!
