In which partition is Vista?
Perhaps you have made a swap partition that is placed between Mint and Vista
In that case Vista is in hd0,2 and the behaviour you describe makes sense, even though I'd expect some error message
For the ACPI let it be on in BIOS if there is an option for that
Then in menu.lst which you have already found add
acpi=off
to the lines that boot Mint
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro acpi=off quiet splash
and the same for Recovery mode
