Booting from live CD.

Postby Akingboy on Sun Mar 15, 2009 3:05 am

Ok so I downloaded, checked md5 and burned Linux Mint 6 Felicia "Main Edition".

My computer shows the splash screen "Linux Mint - blaa blaa - loading ...." and I even get to the login screen where reads "auto logging with user mint" or similar can't remember exactly :P
But after that. I can hear the "boot sound" or something but the screen stays black (I can still see and move mouse). Nothing just happens and it stands there ages.

I once let it be there whole day and it actually got to the desktop with huge amounts of errors and bugs that I couldn't even open menus or anything.

The computer I tried it on isn't the fastest ones but THIS slow!? Somethings got to be wrong...
I also tried it on my super fast computer and the same thing occured.

Tried even burning it to another CD but still the same problem...

Welcome to Mint.

Have you tried installing in safe mode?

Was that sarcasm like "You will get lots of problems with Mint"? :D
I know it wasn't.
Well thank you :)

I haven't gotten even to the desktop of live cd to go install.

I am trying to boot in the "compatibality mode" now.
Lets see how it goes.

EDIT: Hey compatibality mode worked! I got to desktop. But do I ALWAYS have to start it in it if I install Mint now? :S

Welcome to Mint. Nope, not sarcasm, but an actual greeting of gladness to see you here. We have a friendly forum, as you will soon discover.

With Mint 6 (and others distros), quite a few of us have had to start using "compatibility mode" with our hardware. It has something to do with the new xorg, and is not under Clem's control. He would wrangle it into submission if he could.

Once you use "compatibility mode" to load the Live CD and then install Mint, you never worry about that option again. Everything else flows smoothly and normally like a regular install, as far as my situation was concerned.

Please post back once you get everything up and running. We would like to hear how everything goes. Have fun.

Ok this was really warm welcome, thank you :)

The installment is going to take hours though since the partition program tries to open now and has gone only 6% in 30 min :D
I'll tell when I get things up and running. Now its just waiting and hoping best :)

Nope No sarcasm. Genuine welcome.

What you report about the disk partitioning does sound right. May be worth trying the install again.

If you have further problems could you list your hardware.

Ok I got it installed after like 5 tries.

Works nice but I can't change screen resolution higher than 1280x1024 even though my monitor supports 1680x1050.
I see only 4 options in the Monitor Resolution Settings and refresh rate is always 0hz and it just seems so bugged.

Also firefox doesn't launch. Tried to reinstall it but didn't help. Gotta use opera instead.

Glad to hear you eventually succeeded.

Sounds like you may need to change the display driver. What is your graphics card and can you post your xorg.conf file.
