Dreaded BusyBox on Live boot...Other install options???

Postby havocrise on Wed Mar 18, 2009 10:39 am

Hello,

I am a long time Ubuntu user on my laptop, but I have been hearing a lot of great things about Mint. I am wanting to switch to it on my desktop. The problem is, no matter what Ubuntu derivative I use, I get the BusyBox "error" with the Live CD boot. I have tried all_generic_ide and all of that. I think the issue may be that my Windows partition is an nForce RAID 5, and it kills the live boot because it can't read from any of the drives. However, I am trying to install on a SEPERATE drive from the RAID array. I THINK the solution for getting an Ubuntu system on my machine will be to use the Ubuntu alternate install CD. However, I REALLY want to run Mint! I know that with OpenGEU you can install that distro on top of any successfully installed Ubuntu system using their repos. Is it the same with Mint? Can you install it from repos on a plain Jane Ubuntu system? Are there any other options?

TIA!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

The live cd should boot even without a hard disk in the computer
Have you tried Compatibility mode (probably - but I ask anyway)

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

I did try that. I tried manually modifying the boot string to have all_generic_ide. This is a problem I've had with EVERY SINGLE UBUNTU distro since I changed mobos to one with nForce 7.

Can you access it with any Linux?
If so the result of lspci and lspci -v would be helpful
I don't know if there's a way to make a concise list of your hardware in Windows - I've never found one
At least the names of the chips would help

Sorry. I got really busy this weekend. I'll try this in the next several days. I'll see if OpenSUSE's live CD will boot. I've heard it handles fake RAID better than Ubuntu out of the box. I'll see if I can run those commands from it or Knoppix or something. Thanks for your help!
