Grub problem?

After my copy of Ubuntu the (non live installer btw.) began to crash so often that it was unusable I decided the linux gods were telling me to try another distro.

I tried to instal LM 6 first. Everything seemed to go fine till the very end. After I pulled out the cd and hit enter for the reboot I got a black screen of death. I shutdown with the power button, and restarted and everything at first appeared to be fine, however I could not boot into LM (I could boot XP), instead it went to a black screen with words and an error that it couldn't find hda7. I tried following an online tutorial to fix grub, but I completely destroyed it instead. After that I couldn't even start XP.

After that I wiped it all and put windows back and tried LM 5 but couldn't even get the grub screen.

Anyone know what's actually wrong and how to make this work.

a bit more info

to fix grub I tried booting from a live cd and doing this

grub> (command I can't remember to find what goes in (hd0,0) in my case (hd0,5)
grub> root (hd0,5)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit

then it was completely destroyed
