Can't get any CD to boot, scrambled monitor *SOLVED*

Postby mschilling on Mon Apr 06, 2009 7:46 pm

I've installed Mint before, but haven't had good luck with my latest computer, using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 mobo, and 7300GT video card. There must be a bios setting (I chose optimized at first boot) that is wrong, because I've tried different CDs, ones that I know boot ok on my laptop, and both a USB DVD burner, and then an internal SATA burner. Any ideas on what to try changing in the bios to boot? It starts fine until the data loads, and then goes to a scrambled screen. I did manage to get my copy of Windows 7 CD to finally boot and install ok.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hi mshilling - did you try compatibility mode?
You have a nvidia card and quite a few of them don't like the open "nv" driver
Press any key when the Live CD counts down
The only setting in BIOS I dare recommend without looking into it is the one to select primary video - if it exists

I did some more reading about the monitor problem and it turned out that by unplugging the second monitor I have fixed the problem. :D
btw, I left room on my W7 hdd to install Mint. Will the installation of Mint in the unused space of that hdd negatively affect the Windows install?
Or do I need to reinstall Windows.

That will be just fine
That said I don't know if W7 is special in some way that might affect grub, Vista is different from XP but the same lines in grub can be used, and I know other members of the forum that have W7, so....

Thanks, maybe I'll give it a shot.
It's not surprising to hear about others using W7. It's a good compromise between the pros and cons of using XP or Vista, so let's hope it plays well with Mint. Too bad it's set to expire in August.
