TOSHIBA A350-11N INSTALLATION ISSUE

Postby antivirus on Wed Apr 15, 2009 7:55 am

Hi,

I want to run Linux Mint 5 on my Toshiba A350-11N but the liveCD won't even run. When booting from the CD, it gets past loading those 'casper' stuff, and to the linux mint screen, but before it can give me the desktop, it goes back to shell! Something like 'runprogram: /sh??/??????????/' abnormal exit.(I put the question marks because I can't remember it exactly)>

What could be the problem? mint4win won't work either.

Please help.

Did you try Compatibility mode?
If my memory serves me right you find it in Elyssa when the live CD counts down - press any key

Hi,

Thanks for your interest.

Sorry I took that long to reply. Yeah, I had tried Compatibility Mode too before I posted my question. It also goes to shell. Is there a sequence of commands that I can enter so that the installation can start? Does Busybox ring any bells?

Unfortunately
Then your problem is a bit harder
Check this - particularly the section about motherboard problems

What does this mean??

"udevd-event[1555]:run_program: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit"

I keep getting that even when I try those suggestions in the link you put. Then it goes to:

"Busy box v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands
(initramfs)_"

Will I ever be able to run Linux on this thing?!!

"udevd-event[1555]:run_program: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit"

This is very enlightening, but unfortunately it does not help
udev is the device manager in the kernel - it handles dev(ices) (like /dev/sda :))
modprobe is the part of the kernel that loads modules (like udev)
When I google for "run_program: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit" I find a lot of Toshiba laptops so there seems to be some component used by Toshiba that the kernel does not like
The solution I have found is to use
all_generic_ide
as a boot option
You select Compatibility mode and then add this to the line you see at the bottom like described in the troubleshooter

I tried this and again it did not work. Have you heard of any toshiba user who has managed to install linux on their machine? I think they would have some input.

Many Toshiba users have installed Mint successfully, but I don't know about your model
