Seems to me to be a bad DVD
Did you check the md5sum?
Did you burn as slow as possible?
Did you try Compatibility mode?
You find it if you press a key while the live DVD counts down

It seems to be late in the install process - what's the percentage?
Or maybe not - I don't get it

Now to clear any misunderstanding - you have booted into the live desktop and installed?
What you describe is after the install has finished and at the first reboot
Aand X has been changed between Elyssa and Felicia which explains the difference in success (perhaps)
