Can not boot Mint 7 after power outtage. Help...

Postby wyotecher20 on Tue Jun 09, 2009 1:55 pm

Hi...I am still rather new to linux as I have only been using it for about a month. The power went out the other night and now Mint wont boot. I was going to just reinstall as I have nothing personal in linux yet as I am still learning. But, what the hey, I figured fixing it would be as good a learning process as any.
Here is the message I get when I try to boot Mint:

Starting up ...
[ 11.332004 ] ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[ 21.340004 ] ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[ 56.380004 ] ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[ 61.404004 ] ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
Loading, please wait...
Gave up waiting for root device. Common Problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev
ALERT! /dev/sta4 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-2unbuntu7) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs) _

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I would try a clean install if I were you, just to make sure your hardware was not damaged. If you try to learn too much too fast you'll just end up frustrated. The best way to learn is by reading, searching and trying to do stuff on your own before asking for help. Just my opinion of course.

ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16) means that there is a problem with one of the drivers.

I suggest a fresh install too. I don`t recommend trying to learn things too fast because as markcynt said, you may get frustrated.

Ok. Thanks for the advice. I was thinking that a fresh install would be the way to go as well. Just thought I would post before reinstalling in case it was something simple. Thanks again.
