Upgrade from x86 to x64?

Postby sandeep on Thu Jun 11, 2009 9:14 pm

Hi guys, I've just got everything ready on my 32 Bit version of Mint and I just noticed an x64 version has released which is really annoying because I don't want to redo the whole installation again.

Is it possible for me to do an upgrade from 32bit to 64 bit?

Thanks,

btw I really like Mint, much more better than any Linux distro I've used.

Welcome to the forum! I think that trying to upgrade from 32 to 64 bit would be extremely difficult. This type of update would make quite a mess to try and sort too. A fresh install would yield the best results in my opinion.

O Ok thanks for the quick response.

Will Mintbackup be able to backup any changes that I made and restore them in the x64 version?

Here's a great post on backing up stuff, even has details on how to backup your package information so it's can all be batch installed, and you don't have to do everything all over again.

Also, if you created a separate partition for /home, obviously you can keep that. If you didn't, during the new install would be a good time to do it :)

You know what, I just thought about it, and that section in the backup for your packages will re-install the 32-bit versions, I *think*.. Maybe someone else who knows more than me (shouldn't be hard to find!) can chime in on that.

Thanks for the help, I'll get downloading the x64 RC and then get cracking on reinstalling tomorrow.

Oh just saw your other post,

You know what, I think I'll be able to do everything mostly again, it won't really matter then.

I'll just remove everything.

here's a final question.

My swap partition... 0% Usage, I have 4GB RAM and I would think there is no need for a swap, would it be alright just to leave it out?
