Re: Unmount Disk confirmation. [Solved]

Hi all,

Today, i tried to install Linux Mint 7.0. I got a message like 'whether i woulld like to unmount my partition that is in use ?' (a screenshot is attached). Since i am not aware with these information i prefer not to install further as i am also having vista on my lappie with lot of datas on it & i dont want to take any chance by corrupting or disturbing my primary OS. I would like to know what it means unmount my partition & what should i press yes or no.

My Disk details are as under -
160 GB HDD
1. Hidden Partition of 10GB approximately of Vista Recovery
2. C: 70GB with Vista as OS
3. D: Data 38GB Approx.
4. Free Space 35 GB - I had created for Linux Mint in Windows Vista Manage Option.
The screenshot if Disk Partitioner in Linux Mint is attached for reference.

Let me know how should i move to install, as i am worried about selecting mounting option.

Linux mint is using the available free space on the ntfs drive (160GB)
--since it is using free space it wont interfer with the windows partitions, except for the bootloader
--you have to decide whether or not to let Linux mint's GRUB boot loader install into the mbr (master boot record) of the drive where windows has its boot loader, and overwrite it in the GRUB style

You have the option of not creating a mbr under advanced selection,for the Linux mint guided partitioner/install, and therefor not interfering with windows in any way
--you would then have to fixup a bootloader to load Linux

CAn you let me know should i unmount it or not. I have attached the screenshot of the dialog box i got while installing.

Reg. Grup, I would prefer not to install on windows MBR & rather will use EasyBCD's t grub loader so if i want i can uninstall linux partition with much problem.

I am not sure, but I would say yes, accept the option to unmount the drive from the Linux install..
--the only thing that is likely to happen if it cannot use the drive unmounted is that it will say so, and stop the install..

You'll notice that the unmount is for /dev/sdb*
--one can presume that /dev/sdb* is the unallocated free space provided by the windows partition manager, but that it is currently under windows control, as that is the loaded OS..

Vista is on /dev/sda* , so it is not even touching the Vista drive at that point

I would also review some of the links given so far, particularly the apc mac dual boot vista with linux guide, before stepping into it, unless you feel comfortable enough already..

Something doesn't make sense here. Are you inserting an install disk in the cdrom , rebooting and trying to install Mint7? It shouldn't have mounted anything by itself. You may have mounted it yourself once the LiveCD loaded.

I would just reboot with the liveCD in the cdrom drive and just start the install process.
