since it didn't affect Windows XP at all?

It might if you had to install windows onto the computer yourself; I assume that the laptop came pre-installed with a windows OS..
Sure try a few Linux distributions to check, puppy (debian derived), Fedora/mandriva (red hat/rpm derived)

would help to know notebook manufacturer and model #

--the usual suggestion, try a bios update from the manufacturer, or..
  • On boot with Linux, acpi= off
  • Disable non essential devices in the bios

"1. Changing Boot Parameters Temporarily
Generally, this is used when you want to try a parameter change to see it is beneficial to your system. When the PC boots up, you will see the Grub countdown, which is set to 3 seconds by default.
Press "Esc" to intercept this countdown and go enter a Grub menu.

* Press 'e' to start editing.
* Scroll down to the "kernel..." line. The is the line that tells Grub which kernel to boot with and the parameters to be passed to the kernel when it boots are placed at the end of this line.
* Press 'e' again to edit this line.
* Move to the end of the line. You will see any existing parameters and can add other new parameters to the end.
* Parameters are separated by spaces and are mostly either a single word (e.g. nolapic), or an equation (e.g. acpi=off).
* Once you have added the parameter to the end of the line, press Enter to accept the editing.
* Then press 'b' to boot using that kernel and those parameters.
Remember, this change is not permanent. At next boot, it will be undone."
There are quite a lot of boot parameters that can be be tried ..

That was your initial message..
--if you cannot find any other information or use a windows OS boot disk to load into the system and inspect it, I think you are out of luck..

Do you know the shortcut (hotkeys) that jump into the bios of that notebook

I have no idea what that manufacturer is
--there should be a model # or some labels on the machine, or you have the manual that cam with it
if you boot with no CD inserted, is there not a bios message (the pause key, might hold the display or it will stay on screen as there is nothing to boot deom). You should see a long character string, which will include the Bios manufactuer's name or an abbreviation

There are some system diagnostic CDs' available, might work
