strange error, xcfe? "unable to load failsafe session"

Postby kzl on Tue Jul 21, 2009 10:45 am

Hi.

I've done a fresh install of linux mint for the first time after messing with the livecd a couple of times. I'm very new to Linux, so I thought I should give it a permanent try.

Installation went well, no problems at all. The problem starts on the login screen, when you choose session and user. None of the sessions work, except the failsafe terminal. Every session I choose goes to this black screen and a pop-up with an error appears saying: "unable to load failsafe session" and a couple of details which I don't really understand. I've googled it and some people solved this by installing dbus. I installed and it didn't work (sudo apt-get install libdubsetc...) The problem is I don't understand much of Linux to get into details. Please help me with as much detailed information as possible.

Unable to load failsafe session
Unable to determine a failsafe session name. Possible causes:
xfconfd isn't running (D-Bus setup problem);
environment variable $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS is set incorrectly (must include "/etc"),
or xfce4-session is installed incorrectly

Thanks in advance!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

check the iso against the MD5 to see if it's ok, then burn again.

in windows you may use MD5 check:

in linux you may use k3b burning program that integrates the md5 check automatically.

I had several issues for a corrupt cd and the fault was always mine :D

Looks like a bad install to me too!

xfconfd isn't running (D-Bus setup problem);

xfconfd is NEEDED to start a session.
environment variable $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS is set incorrectly (must include "/etc"),

/etc directory is also NEEDED for the Operating System to function.
or xfce4-session is installed incorrectly

Installed incorrectly !

zepita's experience says it all . . check the md5sum, burn as slow as possible . . .

Thanks for the speedy reply. Unfortunately I'm heading for a quick holiday and will only be able to reinstall friday. I'll give you feedback asap.

Md5 checksum DOESN'T match, so I guess it's my own fault :roll: Will redownload and burn at minimum speed.

One more question: Is there any sort of uninstalling I should do first? Should I reinstall by running the CD then clicking on the "install" icon on the desktop (like the 1st time)?

Thanks a bunch

Yup, live CD.

You didn't mention if you were double-booting with Windows, but if Mint is the only OS, then when you get to step 4, the Partitioner, you can just click "Use entire disk", it will overwrite the old install, and automatically set up the proper structure.

Good luck, Richy

ps: A good read - "Considerations before you install" by Fred
