mint 7 boot using puppy linux grub wont work

Postby joesavana on Thu Jul 30, 2009 10:02 pm

hi folks.
i've been using linux for some time. i've edited menu.list many times for several distros on different computers.

this machine dual boots windows xp and puppy linux. the mbr runs xp, and if i want to run linux i boot the floppy which runs grub in puppy linux.

i have several partitions. xp is on hda1, hda5 is swap, puppy linux is on hda6 & hda8.
i installed mint 7 on hda7, 29gig ext3. the bootloader for mint is also installed on hda7. this choice made to keep the original mbr from being altered.

after the mint install, i copied mint's menu.list entry to puppy linux grub menu.list.
however, i can't boot mint. grub gives me error message of bad directory or file type.

this is the menu.list i'm using to boot with:

# GRUB configuration file '/boot/grub/menu.lst'.
# generated by 'grubconfig'. Fri Sep 14 11:36:49 2007
#
# Start GRUB global section
#timeout 30

# End GRUB global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins

# Linux bootable partition config ends

title - For usage examples, type: 'cat /boot/grub/usage.txt'

any ideas why mint 7 wont boot with this menu.list?

thanks,

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Perhaps your try root=/dev/hda7 instead of /dev/sda7 on the Mint part,

hi soundcheck.

i did change sda7 to hda7.. still no boot.

i could let mint modify the mbr, and use mint's grub. but this computer is used by the family, so its easier for them if windows starts in the conventional way without any grub menu to deal with. as mentioned, for linux i boot with the floppy which then runs puppy linux's grub.

i've played with many distros and always edit my existing menu.lst. i've had no problems even with earlier versions of mint.
we will find the answer!

joesavana,

Try chainloading Mint. Use the below boot stanza for Mint 7 in your menu.lst file.

title Mint 7 Gloria
root (hd0,6)
chainloader +1

Then in Puppy open a terminal and type:

grub

root (hd0,6)

setup (hd0,6)

quit

Close the terminal and reboot. See if that doesn't give you access to Mint.

Fred,
it worked! thanks for the info.

i heard of chainloading, but i don't understand the concept.

could you please explain what the statements did, especially those that i typed in the puppy linux console?

thanks again & regards,

joesavana,

Look at the the posts beginning with the one below. There is probably more there than you really wanted to know but it will give you a better understanding of grub and the way it works.
