Installed like 5 times... what to do next

Postby mikeymayhem on Thu Aug 06, 2009 1:36 pm

Okay so here is my general problem and it seems to be with mint and ubuntu...

so i install the operating system... once i get happy with my desktop and all my packages... something freezes.... so i reboot... after a crash i have no choice but to shutdown the entire computer... when i start it up it goes through a variation of { DRDY ERR } i'm a newbie and i don't know what to do ... if i get this far at all sometimes grub wont load at all displaying error 18 at the grub boot loader... or it just sticks.... the problem is i'm doing this like 3 times a day... killdisc to erase and install.... I was just wondering if there is a way i can install this OS and make it secure and stable so i don't have to fret....

One thing i was wondering is why the live cd doesn't have a repair cmd on it....

i'm just really frustrated and confused about how to make this work... i tried to boot from the live cd and mount but it cannot mount the system cuz its just not working properly..

HELP!!! thanks...

Hello mikeymayhem, and Welcome to Linux Mint (even if you can't install it properly) It sounds like your hard-drive had died, as that is the only problem I can think of with those systems. You say you *had* to reboot, but are you aware of the ctrl+alt+del shortcut for restarting the graphical interface without rebooting? I guess the reason there's no repair option is because it's not worth it, Mint installs in *under* half an hour, and very few people have unrecoverable problems like yours, so it's not worth the development effort.
If you have a question that has been answered and solved, then please edit your original post and put a [SOLVED] at the end of your subject header

Hi,
Another thing to try . . Boot the Live CD, and on the first Green Mint screen (when it starts to count down), hit the spacebar, scroll down & run memtest

It'll take a while, let it run, . . I've worked on client pc's where memory errors don't pop up until the last pass.

I'd have to agree with the general consensus here. It sounds like either a memory problem, or a failing hard drive.

If you can boot the Live CD, go into GParted (Partition Manager), there you will see the drives & partitions.
You can post the list here, or a screenshot . . .

Richy

EDIT: Or you can type df -h into a terminal.

Have you tried an install without the TravelDrive hooked up?
