Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

You may need to provide more information. You said trying to install, so the live CD worked, and this problem happened after you installed from the live cd and then rebooted?

What graphics does the laptop have: ATI or Nvidia?

Thank You Guys for the reply : I tried safe graphics mode with same results.

" empty desktop with mouse cursor only no icons no taskbar no menu"......it almost looks like gnome metacity is not loading correctly.

cassandra loads the x server fine and then mint splash starts and complete correctly..it is after that step that everything freezes.

i have an nvidia card and never had any issues.

D1Wayne has posted a few times regarding live cd problems and work-around processes that have worked for him and he has also helped others. Try selecting one of his posts and then viewing all post by him.

This one in particular sounds similar to your issue:

Note: I recall that Clem had indicated that Live-CD beta024.iso is essentially Mint 3.0, so this may help get you started in the right direction.
