boot stuck on memtest

Postby gecko91 on Fri Aug 28, 2009 5:20 am

Hi,
I just installed mint for the first time but I have used linux for the past few years. When i tried to boot for the first time the only option on the grub boot menu was Linux Mint 7 Gloria, memtest86+. If i choose this the memtest runs and I am not able to use the keyboard. Any ideas? I should add that I can not use a live cd as the computer does not have a cd drive. Thanks.

Nathan

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Ok, I think that I'm getting somewhere. I booted from the live cd on another computer and connected my computer as a disk. I can edit the menu.lst file from there. There was only one option in the menu.lst file, not sure why:

Code: Select all
title      Linux Mint 7 Gloria, memtest86+
root      (hd0,2)
kernel   /boot/memtest86+.bin
quiet

I tried adding this:
Code: Select all
title      Linux Mint 7 Gloria
root      (hd0,2)
kernel      /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=/dev/sda3 ro quiet splash
initrd      /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28-11-generic

When I choose this option on boot I get Error 15: File not found.

Make sure all the files exist, that's all I can think

What files should I look for? In the boot folder I found initrd.img-2.6.28-11-generic but I didn't see vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic. Should it be there? If so, how can I get it?

It should be there. That file is Linux itself, without it, you're not going to get anywhere :p

Are there any other files beginning with vmlinuz (or some variation on that)?

If not, you'll probably have to reinstall Mint. I have no idea how that might have happened.

Really strange.. I have no idea how that happened. I guess I'll just have to reinstall. Thanks anyway.
