LM7 - Mintinstall and Mintupdate not working

Postby John Mussington on Thu Sep 17, 2009 12:23 am

Need some help with this.

I recently install LM7 on my Dell inspiron 9300 laptop. I have been using Elyssa dual booting with XP. At first problems were encountered with the installing dual booting, but I discovered this was due to the the windows XP installation on the ntfs partition was frozen using the DeepFreeze software by Faronics. After a complete uninstall of this software from the windows partition the live CD was able to work. This may be useful for anyone who is using that software.

My problem now is that I cannot get mintinstall and mintupdate to work. I am getting the message:
"Could not refresh list of packages" (mintupdate)
"Backing up your APT sources". Mintinstall hangs on this screen.

Syaptic Package manager gave the following error detail:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/packages.linuxmint.com_dists_gloria_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or ostatus file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I suspect that some of the files on the installation disk might have been corrupted or not copied during installation. Could someone please assist with a solution which can avoid a re-installation.

Thanks.

Update (17 Sep 2009, 12:51 am):

I tried this command in a terminal: sudo apt-get update.

Got the following error message:
Fetched 9391B in 2s (3435B/s)
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I'll recommend the simplistic solution. Re-install Mint. Given the things that were happening on the install, things may have gotten "borked" up pretty well with respect to a decent build of Mint.

Thanks DataMan. I am hoping that I will not have to resort to this but I will see how it goes.

Re: LM7 - Mintinstall and Mintupdate not working (SOLVED)

I downloaded a fresh copy of the iso, burned the live CD and reinstalled LM7 to dual boot with Win XP. Everything went fine without any problems. The problem was in fact the live CD, which had been corrupted in some way. This was strange since I used the same CD to make installations on other computers including vista boxes. Anyway I am well on the way to complete the setting up of my new 320 GB hard drive.
