Postby ecronic on Fri Sep 18, 2009 9:46 am

Hi All,

I'm new to Linux and am looking to install it on an External Hard Disk. Could someone direct me with the steps how I can proceed?

Thanks

What have you tried on your own and in which way did it fail?

Hi ddalley,

Thanks for chking out my post.

Im new to linux and I have installed the above mentioned on my usb drive. I have also selected my bootloader as the / partition on my external hard drive. But when I boot from my usb drive it says;

Loading GRUB 1.5

Loading GRUB, Please wait...
Error 22

Could you please guide me as to what I need to do now?

Thanks very much

I may not be the best person to advise you, especially with GRUB, but I'm not 100% sure / is what you should pick.
Instead, try choosing the drive (say, sdb) in the list, not sdb# (sdb1 or whatever).

Is Linux the only thing on the (hard?) drive, or is it a USB flash drive?

Whether expert or not every advise teaches something :).

I'll try what you said about using the sdb and not sdb#.

About the media, its basically a portable usb hdd.

That's fine, but I was wondering if you were dealing with other things still on the drive or whether it is blank, freshly formatted.

Do a new install, and when you get to this page:
Image
Click the
Advanced
button and select to install
Grub
to your first drive (should be sda) if you want to choose between booting Mint and Windows.
But if you want or have the ability to boot directly from the USB drive, (which will let you bring along your drive to friends to show off. :-)) you should choose to install
Grub
to the USB. (Which should be the last drive in that list shown in the pull down menu.)

Ok, I just finished the installation. and at the end of it when it ejects the cd and asks you to press enter and restart...

I got a couple of I/O errors with some error codes and was very quick so can't give you the exact error...

In any case I still restarted the laptop and booted into my ext hdd and got the below error;

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...

Error 17

:) Any ideas?!?

This indicates that grub is in the wrong place. Could you do
sudo fdisk -l
and post the output here?

Sorry about that.
Boot the live CD and run that in a terminal.

Hi Atlef,

Sorry but I installed ubuntu and removed the linuxmint. Infact I follow ddally's advise about selecting the sdb and not sdb# as the boot loader partition and it worked. But when I tried the same with my linuxmint install it didn't work. But now ill be trying something...

Is it ok to;

1. Install LM along with Ubuntu by resizing the hdd?

2. Is it possible to edit menu.lst and other files that are required to edit for booting in I'm in ubuntu i.e. editing linuxmint files from ubuntu?

Thanks
